1. Your parent(s) show significant weight loss: As people get old, the body sheds fat which in turn reduces the weight. Gradual reduction in weight amongst the aging persons is normal. However, significant weight loss within a short period of time could be an indicator that all is not as well as it should be. Illness and depression are two significant factors that lead to sudden weight loss. Unless you are able to determine and rectify the cause - something that usually requires a lot of time and effort on your part, the best way to care for your aging parents would be to consider a quality elder care solution.

Could your Dog be Suffering from Canine Acne?

Could your Dog be Suffering from Canine Acne?

Author: Matthew Homfray

Everyone knows of acne as a human condition suffered by unfortunate teenagers during adolescence, but it is in fact quite common in certain breeds of dog too. The most susceptible breeds are young adult boxers, English bulldogs, Doberman pinschers, Great Danes and Rottweilers. The condition starts at puberty around 5 to 8 months of age. Most dogs improve with age and the condition typically resolves after one year of age, though some dogs can develop chronic acne.

Dogs with canine acne develop multiple comedones (blackheads) on their chin, lips, and muzzle. Plugs of debris made of natural substances such as keratin and sebum block the hair follicles, causing focal swellings which can rupture to form scabs.

Dogs with this condition have swellings, scabs and blackheads on their lips, chin and muzzle. These usually do not bother the dog unless a secondary bacterial skin infection develops. This can cause pain and itching, leading the dog to scratch at his/her face or rub it along the carpet.

Home Made Fish Food

Home Made Fish Food; How to Make a Nutritious Fish Food for Tropical Fish, Goldfish, and Carnivorous Fish

Author: Carl Strohmeyer

You can make your own supplement for general fish feeding that is high in DL-methionine (an important amino acid in fish nutrition); Start with whole salmon which is an excellent source of carotene for color (frozen or even canned works), frozen peas, hard boiled egg, frozen or FD brine shrimp, duck weed or spiulina powder, and fish oil (cod liver oil works fine). Blend this mixture then add corn starch to the paste to dehydrate. Spread this paste on small strips of foil (or even wax paper if your dehydrator does not get to hot). Make sure you leave room for air circulation.

For a frozen food, substitute the corn starch with unflavored gelatin powder.

For goldfish and koi, add wheat germ powder. Use this formula for African Cichlids, except delete the wheat germ.

For more carnivorous fish increase the whole fish and decrease the spirulina powder or duckweed. Calamari (squid) can be added too for carnivorous fish, but make sure that all the ink is removed from whole squid.

Use this formula for Discus.

For spirulina powder, Spirulina One Flake can be substituted, but since this already a complete diet for many fish, I double the amount of this and decrease other ingredients by comparable amounts.

Here are basic percentages, please note that you can change these percentages to suit your fish food requirements:

BASIC/GOLDFISH/CARNIVOURE

Whole Salmon: 25% 20% 30%

Peas: 25% 25% 15%

Egg: 20% 15% 25%

Brine shrimp: 15% 15% 15%

Spirulina Powder:10% 15% 5%

Wheat Germ: 0% 5% 0%

Squid: 0% 0% 5%

Fish Oil: 2% 2% 2%

Corn Starch or Gelatin: 3% 3% 3%

Round Table Discussions

Ever hear of a 'Round Table' discussion? I've used this technique for years and with a lot of success. It's not always the final answer but it helps to clear the air.

When you notice a lot of fussy fights, grumbling and complaining going on around the house, it's time to find out what the problems are and how to fix it.

For this to work, any member of the family can request a Round Table. Here are the rules.

Each time you call a round table, it should be held in the same room, every time. Each member of the family finds a comfortable seat. Then you decide who goes first. Draw cards, if you can't settle on which one of you gets to talk first.

Each member get their turn before the Round Table is finished. Each member in turn, has the floor. While this member is airing their gripes, nobody is to interrupt. Just listen until that member is finished with what they have to say.

When he or she is finished, they sit down. Then each member, one after another, following around the room in a circle, gives their opinion. When voicing your opinion, you simply make suggestions about what you think the solution is. You don't argue with the speaker. This is not the time to bring up your own complaints. The entire family will stay on the subject brought up by the speaker, and only that subject, until a solution is found.

Then following around the room in a circle, each member gets a turn to air their complaints. Again, all members will stick only to the subject brought up by the speaker.

During this process, the members are held to a strict rule of 'no interrupting'. They will get their turn.

Even if the complaint is 'I'm sick and tired of little sister dumping her dirty clothes on my bedroom floor' or 'I've had it with the kids running through the kitchen, while I'm trying to prepare dinner'. Regardless of the complaint, it is to be treated with respect and a solution found among the members.

Establish new rules, to confront these complaints. Write them down and post them on the refrigerator, to make sure everyone remembers the new rules.

Having ones complaints listened to and resolved, even if it's only through a new household rule, makes each family member feel important and solves a lot of bickering.

As silly as all this sounds, it works. It's a way of handling family problems in a business like manner, causing each member to view the family in a more organized way.

Give it a try, the next time you hear that unhappy noise down the hall. You just might discover a new weapon to use against family strife.

Does this dress make me look Fat?

Never! I mean, NEVER say what you think. Let me share with you, the proper way to answer. It works. I promise.

You have to crawl outside of yourself and into her mind, to answer this question. Here's what it sounds like:

"Hon. You know I'm blind, when it comes to you. I look at you through loving eyes and I can't see what it is you see, when looking in the mirror. So this is a hard one for me. I have to find some way to look at you like a stranger, before I can answer that. To me, you're beautiful all the time.

Now, the only way I can come even close to giving you an unbiased opinion, is to look at you the way you do. I love you and I know what would embarrass you, so that's all I can come up with - What would embarrass you. So please, don't take offense, if I say something you don't want to hear. I'm not talking from my point of view, I'm trying to see things from your point of view.

I mean, it's like if you have something between your teeth. I tell you because I love you and don't want you to discover it later and hate me for not telling you. I don't tell you because it offends me. "

Then and only then, take a good hard look. I mean, really! For her sake. Have her turn around. Cock your head a little. Act like you care!

Then you can say something like," OK. Everything looks great except one area. That skirt cups around your belly. You can't see it in the mirror but looking at you the way others will, is a whole other matter. You know I love you and don't care but I know you care and would be embarrassed if you knew what others could see. So, I'm telling you, in all truthfulness, except for that section of the skirt, it looks great."

You see, where guys go all wrong is not understanding that his woman wants to know he's on her side. She doesn't need your criticism. She needs your understanding and love. She wants to know that when she steps out that door, other people are not going to look at her and be thinking, "Why couldn't her husband tell her what that looks like?"

That's it. That's what it's all about. You approach her in this way and she'll trust your opinion for the rest of her life and will continuously come to you for that final approval. She will also feel safe, when she steps out the door.

Nothing will endear you to your wife, more than letting her know you're on her side.
